Raj’s Journey: From Hong Kong to the Himalayas
Hong Kong-based Nepali businessman Raj Gurung has always been passionate about hiking and camping. During his three visits to Nepal in a single year, he completed the trek three passes, including the Everest base camp, which further fueled his desire for trekking and climbing. Despite being told by a Kathmandu-based trekking agency that climbing Island Peak was not possible, he remained determined and accomplished the feat. “It was an incredible experience to reach the summit and witness the breathtaking 360-degree panorama,” said Gurung. “That moment inspired me to set my sights even higher.”
Raj was planning to climb the 8,163-meter-high Manaslu Himal this season. At the same time, he met with renowned mountaineer Phurba Tenzing Sherpa. Phurba, who has set many records in the Guinness Book of World Records, is running a company called Dreamers Destination. He advised Raj to climb the 6,812-meter Amadablam before Mount Everest, which was considered a very technical mountain.
Recently, he traveled back to Hong Kong from Amadamlam, gathering all of his positive experiences about the Himalaya. He aims to climb Mount Manaslu in October and the mighty Mount Everest in the following year. If successful, Gurung will become the first and only Nepalese from Hong Kong to summit Everest.
Gurung’s aspirations extend beyond Everest, with the ultimate goal of conquering the seven highest mountains on the seven continents. Despite the inherent risks and challenges, he remains unyielding in his determination. He trains diligently, setting aside a portion of his income for mountain climbing and participating in a hiking meetup group with over 36,000 members.
Gurung’s journey serves as an inspiration, demonstrating that with determination and perseverance, dreams can be realized. His story reminds us that even the most audacious goals can be achieved through unwavering focus and unwavering dedication.
