Phurba Tenjing Sherpa appointed Goodwill Ambassador of Europe’s Largest National Park

del GRAN SASSO e MONTI della LAGA National Park (Italy), Europe’s one of the largest national park, has announced the world renowned Nepalese mountaineer Phurba Tenjng Sherpa its Goodwill Ambassador.

Amidst a program organized by the We Will Rise Foundation, Lawyer Tamasso Navarro, the president of the park handed over the official parchment of ambassadorship to the mountaineer, Phurba Tenjing Sherpa, in the presence of Parbat Gurung, former Communication and Information Technology Minister, Radhika Shakya, spouse of former prime minister K.P. Oli Sharma, and other dignitaries on Saturday in Kathmandu.

After the 2015 earthquake in Nepal, Phurba came to Italy for his campaign “Visit Nepal to Help Nepal,” and that’s when our cooperation started.

Sherpa, who was born in Rolwaling Valley, Dolakha, has been appointed as the Gran Sasso’s Goodwill Ambassador in recognition of his achievements, contributions, and passion in mountaineering and mountain tourism.

Spreading over two thousand fourteen square meters, Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park are Europe’s largest park, enriched with 60–70% of Europe’s biodiversity and hosting Italy’s highest mountain, Corno Grande, also known as Gran Sasso. “After the 2015 earthquake in Nepal, Phurba came to Italy for his campaign “Visit Nepal to Help Nepal,” and that’s when our cooperation started.” President Navarro said. “In collaboration with Davide and Explora Nunat International, Phurba established a model of tourism infrastructure by constructing the Via Ferrata on the Tashi Laptsa Pass connecting Rolwaling with Everest. It is a matter of pride for us to have him as our goodwill ambassador.”

Inviting the Italian guests to Budhanilkantha Municipality, a gateway to Shivpuri National Park, Deputy Mayor Anita Lama said, “Phurba, the son of Himalaya, has made the nation proud, presenting a beautiful example for youths to seek career choices in Nepal.”

The special guest of the program, Radhika Shakya, praised the unique work of the We Will Rise Foundation for scouting talents from all over Nepal and providing them platforms to flourish, following the same analogy as Phurba Tenjing Sherpa.

As a goodwill ambassador, Sherpa will get more visibility in Italy and Europe to promote Nepal’s geographical, cultural, natural, and religious diversity institutionally through the park authority. In addition, as a goodwill ambassador, Sherpa will become a part of the global scientific community studying the environment, biodiversity, and ecology. Also, as a goodwill ambassador, Sherpa will play the role of a bridge between the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Parks and the national parks and conservation areas of Nepal.

In addition to this, all the members of Explora Nunat International were felicitated for the construction of Via Ferrata, a steel cable way, in 2017 and 2019, in Nepal’s beautiful and difficult Tashi Laptsa Pass.
